Minister’s Summer Message

I love summertime! I love just being able to take time out to enjoy creation in its fullness. John Lubbock said, “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”

It’s never a waste of time to take a step back and enjoy creation and to be thankful to God for it.

Summer is my favourite season. I love the energy it gives me, except on the really hot days when all you can do is find shade and imposed rest. Summer makes me feel invigorated and encourages me to do all the things left undone from the winter.

I love the beauty of the emerging colours and the mixture of fragrances. I love the birds singing and the new life which springs up. I love the bees filling the garden with their buzz of busyness and butterflies fluttering from flower to flower. I love the blueness of the sky and the shapes the clouds make and I just love the long days and the general hope the season brings. Even the thunderstorms hold within them a strange and frightening beauty.

I love the summer because during this season we see the fullness of life which was only hinted at in the spring. And now, the promise of new life shown in springtime as the first green shoots pushed though the ground is now shown in all its glory as the blossoms and flowers burst with colour and variety in our gardens and across moor and meadow.

And we see through the warmth and power of the strengthening sun life growing in all its fullness. But even in this array of beauty we still see the promise of more to come and as the flowers themselves begin to change we know that they will in time and give way to fruit that will be harvested in the autumn.

Our relationship with God through Jesus the Son brings life too. Firstly that new life in Jesus we experience when we realise the truth of who He is and what He has done for us and then, as we allow him to cause the growth in us, we see life in all its fullness as we begin to bear fruit fruit of the kingdom.

C. S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

The same should be said for us too; we believe because the Son has risen and, living in us, we see everything new through Him.

We experience fullness of life as we bask in the light of the Son receiving power from Him to bear fruit that others too may experience that same life.

Have a wonderful summer.

God bless.

Jeff
